The English cricket team were able to put together an extremely memorable performance in Cardiff to pull off an emphatic victory against their Australian counterparts and kick the 2015 Ashes off in a very exciting way. Most of the bookmakers didn’t think that England really had what it takes to get the victory against this feared Australian side but Alastair Cook’s men conjured up a great series of performances as a good portion of the team played well when it was most important - and this sets them up nicely going forward.
There was a lot to like about England’s performance and few people would have thought that England were going to win at all considering the fact that they haven’t won many tests over the past few years - particularly since getting destroyed by the Aussies in a 5-0 whitewash during the last Ashes series.
However, even fewer people would have thought England even had a remote chance of pulling off a win by a full day and 169 runs.
Joe Root seemed to be in all the right places at all the right times and this justified his bookmaker favouritism before the test kicked off. They had him pegged as the top English runscorer and that trend looks to continue here as we head into the second Ashes test at Lord’s.
The Australian side are still getting the edge from the bookmakers here and that will be music to the ears of the England faithful who will be backing them to continue their winning ways and pull off a win that would see the series shift to 2-0, which would make it almost impossible for Australia to retain the Ashes, barring a legendary performance where they would win three test matches on the trot in England - and these things just don’t happen.
