The bookmakers have the Australians trading at an 11/8 price tag right now and that’s a decent listing for some but it will probably be smarter to wait a little bit and see whether they decide to bat or bowl first. It will be a very important toss to win at Lord’s and you reckon that England will want to get out there with the bat first and put up a big total for Australia to deal with.
The England side trade at a 7/4 listing right now and that’s a decent wager as things could get very interesting very quickly here and the bookmakers will be looking to clip that price down as soon as England start to showcase their overall skill and ability to put runs on the board and take wickets at key moments.
The draw trades at a 5/2 margin for the moment and, with little rain in the forecast in London in the coming days, it looks as though we won’t have the test affected by the weather. That price would probably be a lot shorter if there was but it really looks like England have the ability to bowl the Aussies out twice - which is something that many people didn’t think they had in them during the build-up to the series. How wrong they have been proved.
You ultimately have to enjoy the fact that there is a real buzz about this test now coming into it and the Australians will have learned a pretty quick lesson at Cardiff about how you can’t win test matches - much less Ashes test matches - when your top batsmen are posting 30s. Joe Root stepping up with that big century gave England exactly what they needed at the exact right time.
The bookmakers have now listed England as the outright favourites to win the Ashes series and they now have them trading at an odds-on price tag of 10/11 to bring the tiny urn back to English shores. Australia to pull off a series win and retain the Ashes would pay out at 7/4 while a drawn series - which is still very much a possibility - would reward at 4/1.
