2017 Travers Stakes Betting Tips PT 2

It’s probably going to be factoring into the minds of virtually everybody watching the contest that we saw Arrogate emerge in this race last year - shocking the world at 10/1 and rapidly putting together a string of successes that saw him dominate older horses in both the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Pegasus World Cup - making him the richest American horse ever.

Despite that, Arrogate has actually lost his last two contests at Del Mar - clearly jeopardizing his position as the world’s highest rated thoroughbred and the fact that the Breeders’ Cup Classic will be held over the exact same surface again this year likely means that more of the contenders here in the Travers will be expected to run in that race as well - and likely take it to Arrogate early on, since he has never looked more vulnerable.

The betting favourite appears to be Bob Baffert’s aptly-named colt West Coast. A $425,000 purchase as a yearling at Keeneland September, this runner has put together a steady string of victories out on the West Coast and he’s coming off a very similar angle to Arrogate - likely why he is competing for the betting favourites position in a top race despite never actually having won a Grade 1 contest.

His victory in the Los Alamitos Stakes a few weeks ago puts him in a good position to move forward and a fresh horse can be particularly dangerous in this type of position facing off against Triple Crown winners.

Look for him at a price between 3/1 and 4/1, ante post.
