2019 Kentucky Derby Ante Post Update PT 2

There are a few European bookmakers who list him at a double-digit price but right now he is the only one who is trading as the heavy favorite.

One of the most exciting cold to emerge has been a contender known as Coliseum who runs in the Godolphin silks and is trained by Bob Baffert. The talented two-year-old son of Tapit has plenty of hype surrounding him at the moment after his Maiden victory at Del Mar racetrack just a week ago.

Sheikh Al- Maktoum’s racing outfit had not worked with Baffert up to this point, preferring to go with Christophe Clement and Eoin Hardy to handle their American charges but they appear to be determined to win the Kentucky Derby and have gone to Bob Baffert in recent weeks.

The move itself makes sense because the American trainer, based at Santa Anita racetrack in Los Angeles, has produced two Triple Crown winners in the past five years - once with American Pharoah and another with Justify who broke the famous Curse of Apollo this year by becoming the first colt since 1883 to win the Kentucky Derby without racing at the age of two.

Coliseum has been backed into the second favourite’s position in the ante post markets and he will continue to pick up steam with each successive victory but the fact that Sheikh Al-Maktoum’s Godolphin colours are still yet to see the winners circle after the Derby will definitely be an issue going forward.

There is still plenty of time between now and the first Saturday in May so a lot can happen and Baffert tends to debut his superstars a little bit later on in the Derby Trail these days as opposed to breaking maidens at Del Mar in November.
