2019 Pegasus World Cup Update PT 1

Things are definitely starting to heat up in the betting markets for the upcoming Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park which is now just a couple of weeks away from unfolding. There is plenty to like about this contest and it’s starting to be viewed as a de facto career finale for a lot of big contenders in the older handicap division right now.

The big story heading into the race is obviously Accelerate who is embroiled in a tight race against Triple Crown champion Justify for Horse of the Year honours despite the fact that this race won’t really have any bearing on that since it counts towards 2019 as opposed to 2018.

Accelerate remains the outright favourite for this one by a decent distance and the failure over the weekend of Audible to win what should have been a pretty easy victory against older allowance level horses at his preferred track, Gulfstream, shows that he may not be the challenger many thought him to be for Accelerate as we go forward.

For a while, Audible had been considered the second antepost favourite for the Pegasus World Cup and those days seem long-gone now as he trades at a solid each-way price in the mid teens.

The big challenger at this point in time appears to be City of Light, who has put together a good volume of work so far and will also be retiring to Lane’s End Farm for stallion duty following the Pegasus World Cup. It would be a real feather in the cap of the stallion manager at Lane’s End if Accelerate and City of Light were able to storm home 1-2 on the big day in late January.
