Big Brother 2005
Betfair Summer2008

We’ve now had a couple of days to assess the big brother house. When the producers first discussed the type of contestants they wanted, a large chest must have been one of the top priorities (if not the only priority) as far as the girls were concerned. As for the boys, the ability to come across as irritating looks to have been top of the list.

At this stage of proceedings, it is Saskia, Kemal, Roberto and Anthony favoured most to become the eventual winner. Mary, Maxwell, Sam are then next most likely according to the odds layers. Then come the outsiders with Makosi heading this bunch of wanabees with a best price 14/1.

What is so interesting about this year’s Big Brother is no obvious candidates jump out as worth backing at this stage to win. Given this lack of clarity, trying to identify a few people to back is a tricky task. Perhaps the best method is a process of elimination to see whom we are left with.

Someone who I am prepared to immediately strike of the list is Kemal – this year’s Nadia. No two consecutive Big Brother winners are ever that similar, and so I don’t see the public casting their votes towards the Turkish contestant.

Craig, Lesley and Vanessa all fall in the category of harmless but utterly forgettable.

Science will be good entertainment value but doesn’t look a winner. As far as I am concerned, Derek has entered the house to raise his public profile (the spontaneous poems are the big giveaway) and the public shouldn’t take too long to latch onto this.

Frontrunners Saskia and Roberto are yet to show too much of their personalities, which may have been a good tactic in the early Big Brothers but won’t work as well in 2005. The same argument can be applied to Sam and Anthony – who is already facing an uphill struggle after alienating the crowd when entering the house.

Maxwell is the geezer of the house, but there is a growing suspicion he isn’t as genuine as he would have us all believe. Reports in the Sun suggest Max was part of the trial run for Big Brother 5 and has also tested out the set of The Farm. Both shows are produced by Endemol.

This leaves Mary and Makosi.

Mary has so far come across as the most genuine person in the house. Her vulnerability has actually been a positive with her fellow housemates making an extra effort to help her settle in. There is definitely much more to come from Mary who is a self confessed witch. She should make for good viewing over the coming weeks.

Makosi was unfortunate to become the thirteenth housemate, but this actually may work for her in the long run. There is a big difference to being nasty and nasty out of necessity. Having to secure the most nominations to be voted out has proved great entertainment so far.

When the house finds out the real reason for her behaviour, she will most likely become one of the more popular housemates – given that even when trying to be nasty – there seems to be a fair few housemates who still have time for her.
Despite the above two female contestants positives, I am unable to recommend either to win. What does though make some appeal is the 20/1 on offer for “any other”. Three months is an awful long time, and there will no doubt be some incident that raises the possibility of a new contestant.

In previous years, latecomers have not lasted too long, but what makes this year different is this year’s Big Brother contestants aren’t exactly that likeable, and a new person would have a better chance to gain the approval of the public.
