Breeders Cup 2006 Betting Tips

The Breeders' Cup takes place on Saturday evening and the card has thrown up some fascinating encounters and some potentially remarkable stories. The Breeders Cup Classic will prove to be the most interesting race of the year as Irish invader George Washington heads the European contingent travelling to Kentucky to face two of the world's top ranked horses, Bernandini and Lava Man.  

Both the Aidan O'Brien trained colt and David Junior, the David Sullivan-owned four-year old, are set to retire to stud after their trans-Atlantic journey. Bernandini will go off a close-to-evens favourite – 6/5 available antepost with Blue Square. Although George Washington and David Junior are unknown quantities on the dirt, odds of 10/1 (Ladbrokes) and 11/1 (totesport) respectively simply must raise eyebrows after a summer of exemplary flat racing in the UK and Ireland.

The bet here is with George Washington to beat one of the American wonder horses, which are both undefeated this calendar year, and at least place. However, it is difficult to look past the vision of Bernandini's owners walking away with the winner's prize of more than $2 million.

Elsewhere, positive vibes emanating from Upper Lambourn by Satulagi's trainer Stan Moore will surely see the winner of the Ascot Listed Winfield Stakes odds shorten significantly from the current 50/1 available generally for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Moore's claim is that his horse has the experience that others in the race do not. Bred in the United States, Satulagi will fair better than most of the European stock racing on the fast dirt of Churchill Downs and is certainly worth an each way punt at 50s.  

The Breeders Cup Mile sees the Jeremy Noseda-trained Araafa make the trip across the pond. Noseda has long targeted the Breeders Cup Mile and Araafa arrives in excellent form, being one of the few horses to beat George Washington this year. His odds are shortening for the Kentucky race and take 5/1 for the win if it's available anywhere.
