Lord Sam puts his unbeaten record over fences on line when he steps out of novice company for the first time on Saturday. Brought along steadily by trainer Victor Dartnall, Lord Sam shaped as if a real test of stamina was required when winning his last two starts last season. After scrambling home over Kempton's easy three miles, he patently found the two and a half mile trip too short when fighting back strongly to shade a grade 3 novice at the Punchestown Festival in April. Saturday's extended three miles on what is already soft ground will see him in an even better light, and he will not be inconvenienced if the ground turns even softer – has coped well with testing conditions in the past.
