Cheltenham festival racing is the highlight of the jump season and betting is usually frenetic. Practically all the best runners and riders on the jump scene appear at Cheltenham and this year's race promises to be one of the closest run and open fields in recent memory.

Cheltenham bet activity is expected to top £650m online and looks set to be the most popular festival yet. The Cheltenham Gold Cup will be the hub of the betting activity at the festival, so we decided to give you a few tips to help you pick your horse.

Cheltenham race winners for seven of the last eight Gold Cup races have been winners or runners-up previously at other Cheltenham festival racing events, so our first tip is to bet on a horse in good form.  However, consider also that those horses who finished second or third in the previous year have not fared well, with only The Fellow and Bregawn having won a Cheltenham Gold Cup after finishing in one of these two positions the year before.

Cheltenham racing form suggests horses who have run only a few races in the year tend to do well, with nine of the last ten winners having raced three times or fewer in the season before the big race.  Also consider first time runners, as of the nine past races, six have been won by horses racing for the first time in the Gold Cup.
