Football odds: Serie A midweek action

After coming undone against Liverpool last week, leaders Inter were held at Sampdoria on Sunday, enabling second-placed Roma to reduce their league lead to nine points – and the Giallorossi can bridge the gap by a further three points with a win at the San Siro. Roma won 2-1 against Real Madrid last week and after following that up with a 1-0 defeat of Fiorentina, will be confident of putting one over on Inter, who might just be suffering their first wobble.

The Nerazzurri walloped Roma 4-1 earlier in the season but Roma are a side capable of rising to any occasion; they beat Inter in the Coppa Italia last season, the Super Cup earlier this season and they will be up for this match. At 7/2 they represent excellent value to put another spanner in Inter's works.

On Tuesday night the Turin derby pits disgruntled Juventus against Torino with the Old Lady of Italian football still whingeing about the three penalties they were denied in their shock reverse at Reggina on Saturday. The Bianconeri were so vexed that they wrote an open letter to the authorities decrying the standard of refereeing since a host of officials (many of whom were adjudged to have been in their pay) were struck off in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal.

If anything, the siege mentality at Juve will only serve to strengthen their resolve and they can be expected to bounce back against their 12^th-placed rivals. Claudio Ranieri's side have surprised everyone with the way they have adapted to their return from Serie B, they have not lost any league matches to any of Italy's major players this term and that big-game mentality should give them their second win of the season over Torino.

One of the other surprise sides of the season is Genoa, who won 5-3 at Udinese on Sunday. Striker Marco Borriello has broken into the Azzurri side this season with his excellent form this season and has enjoyed a new lease of life since leaving AC Milan in the summer. This time last year the 25-year-old was serving a drugs ban caused by smearing a cortisone cream into his how's your father after contracting an STD from the lovely-on-the-outside-but-beware-what-lies-beneath Belen Rodriguez.

Since then, though, goalscoring has been his only disease and as far as Borriello is concerned it can stay for keeps. He has now moved level at the top of the Serie A scorers' charts alongside David Trezeguet with 15 Serie A goals after scoring a hat-trick at the weekend. The in-form striker can be trusted to plunder more against a Napoli side, who until beating lowly Livorno on Sunday had only won once away all season.
