Rugby World Cup 2007

The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition in the World. The event is organized by the sport's governing body, the International Rugby Board ("IRB"). The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and is now contested every four years.

The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after the Rugby School pupil credited with the game's invention.

The title of world champion is currently held by South Africa, who won the 2007 tournament held in France when they beat England in the final. The next Rugby World Cup will be hosted in New Zealand during September and October of 2011.

And it is that kind of will, that sheer belief that has hauled England from nothing to something.

France too strong in World Cup semi
12-Oct-2007
Both teams come into this fixture with the strange whiff of rugby success adhering to them after their wins over the world's top two rugby teams. And it all looked so bad a few weeks ago. England's 2003 World Cup semi-final rematch with France in Paris is the first time that teams who had lost in the Pool stage have contested a game at this stage of the tournament.

Argentina too strong for turgid Scots
07-Oct-2007
Some may see Argentina as the surprise package of this tournament, but they fully merit their success at this World Cup and they should easily account for Scotland. Whether it was nerves, or the heat of the battle, the Scots were turgid against Italy. They failed to score a try and relied far too heavily on points machine Chris Paterson.

Hosts France will be clinging to one memory when they take on New Zealand in Cardiff. It is a memory that will live long in the hearts of all French rugby fans, and one that made a certain Christophe Lamaison a national hero. I am talking of course, about Les Bleus' eye-poppingly brilliant World Cup semi-final defeat of the All Blacks at Twickenham in 1999.

Keeping it in the forwards

There is an old saying in rugby circles which states that forwards win the match while the backs decide by how much. It's a neat phrase, but a bit patronising if you have cauliflower ears and stand over 6ft 5in tall.
