That was the week that was
March 25, 2008 - Darren Holland

It was a bad week for Derby County, what with yet another defeat and their manager, Paul Jewell, scoring an own goal after being caught by the NOTW allegedly romping with a blonde. As far as ruts go, you can't get worse than that currently experienced by the Rams, although Arsenal's awful run continued with a defeat at Chelsea after being 1-0 up, with Manchester United taking a five-point lead at the top of the table.
Maria Sharapova is also feeling a bit jaded right now after her hectic schedule saw her crash out of Indian Wells last week. The Russian star has clocked up over 50,000 miles already this year, which is about as many as Lewis Hamilton had to drive in his attempt to weave his way through the pack on Sunday in the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Football Betting: Arsenal out-gunned in title race
Manchester United's thrashing of Liverpool in controversial circumstances has seen the Red Devils take a five-point lead in the Premier League after Arsenal fell to a brace from Chelsea's Didier Drogba. Read Richard Aikman's focus on the title run-in on our home page.
Golf Betting: Ogilvy downs Tiger as last
Geoff Ogilvy needed no fewer than 11 pars in his last 11 holes to down Tiger Woods in the CA Championship at Doral. Ogilvy finished 17 under, with Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen and Jim Furyk one shot behind. Tiger could only managed 15 under!
F1 Betting: Kimi rides the Prancing Horse to victory
Ferrari roared back in Formula One this weekend with Kimi Raikkonen winning the Malaysian Grand Prix. Britain's Lewis Hamilton started on the grid in ninth, but despite winding his way through the pack, he could only finish fifth in his McLaren.
Our bets
The good: Richard Aikman suggested that Heikki Kovalainen was a great each-way bet at 10/1 in the Malaysian Grand Prix and so it proved as the Finn trailed in third behind Robert Kubica and winning compatriot Kimi Raikkonen.
The bad: We thought Arsenal and Chelsea would reach a stalemate on Sunday; a bet that looked in good shape when the Gunners fired into the lead. Didier Drogba had other ideas however, and although he equalised, he took the Blues into the lead late in the game.
The ugly: We also felt that Liverpool looked a big price away at Manchester United at 3.8, but that all went horribly wrong when they went 1-0 down and Javier Mascherano lost his cool and was sent off.
The week ahead
Football: It's a big week for football as we have a full international programme in midweek along with all the usual feast of club football on Saturday. Come back on Wednesday to read Richard Aikman's take on France v England as well all the best international tips.
Rowing: The annual row-off between Oxford and Cambridge will see millions of spectators worldwide glued to their TV sets, as each one chooses a nominal University to shout for in what is always a thrilling spectacle.
