It looks as though Scotland's Andy Murray has taken a massive step towards securing his next Masters Series title by dispatching current world #2 Roger Federer in Shanghai. It was a must-win scenario for Federer and he will be missing out on the quarter finals. Federer never seemed to recover from his disappointing opening match to Gilles Simon and was undone by Murray's intensity and tenacity.
Murray and Djokovic Favoured For Final
The next challenge for Murray is a semi-final clash with Nikolay Davydenko and a number of popular bookmakers have placed Murray as the odds-on favourite to take the match and set up a finals clash with either Gilles Simon of Novak Djokovic. Currently, Djokovic is the favoured player to face off against Murray in the final with Murray listed as the favourite to win the tournament at 5-4 and Djokovic not far behind at 6-4.
Semi-Final Betting Tips
The odds are favouring Andy Murray to win the match in straight sets with a 2-0 victory listed at evens. I am personally drifting towards the much more enticing 2-1 Murray win which is listed at 23-10. A Davydenko victory pays 9-2 for straight sets and 17-4 for a 2-1 victory. Much will depend on who wins the opening set, Murray is favoured to win it and is listed at a 1-2 margin. However, Murray is listed at 9-2 to lose the first set and win the match. There is definitely some value there and you can hedge your bets in several different ways.
An interesting permutation might be to back Murray to win the 1st set by a 6-1 or 6-2 margin (paying 16/1 and 9/1, respectively) and then hedging that bet with a 9-2 bet on Murray to lose the 1st set and win the match.
