Ladbrokes can report that they expect a Chelsea quadruple to cost the betting industry £5 million. The odds on a Jose Mourinho quadruple were cut from 28/1 to 18/1 after they booked a place in the Carling Cup final but were 200/1 back in August when the Premiership season started.
Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: "A Chelsea quadruple will cost us over £500,000 and we estimate that by the end of the season it could cost the industry £5 million. It will make the payout on Manchester United's treble in 1999 look like pocket money."
" It seems Mourinho has the edge over Sir Alex in every area at the moment, even in helping punters inflicting pain on the bookmakers. We lost over £500,000 on the United treble in 1999 but we stand to lose that already on a Chelsea quadruple and we've got some way to go yet. We're praying Jose loses his magic touch or we'll be facing a world record football payout."
"There's little doubt that punters believe the historic quadruple is achievable, the first bet this morning was £200 and they've been pouring in ever since."
Ladbrokes.com customer Andrew Briggs from Brighton has won a £10,000 bet on an FA Cup fourth round match at the weekend. Suffice to say he's still making his decision as to which side he will bet on.
