In  light of England's first Test debacle against New Zealand in Hamilton – when they were humiliated by 189 runs – it has not taken the bookmakers long to attempt to make money from the misery.

If layers are not making as much as they would like from the patriotic pound, they waste little time trying to earn from the pessimistic one. The bookies have produced some specials which fit the bill for those fearing another horrible performance in game two, which starts in Wellington on Wednesday night.

Unsurprisingly they centre around careers and whether they are over or not. Steve Harmison is 6/4 not to play a Test for England in the summer, a price which looks worth taking considering it would be a surprise if he played again let alone in Wellington.

And the firm have also priced up next England captain with Michael Vaughan under obvious pressure. Paul Collingwood and Alastair Cook are the 15/8 favourites.

It could all look rather premature if England win at the Basin Reserve, however, a ground which historically helps the swing bowlers. And Ryan Sidebottom aside, England need all the help they can get.

At no better than 7/4 – New Zealand are 9/4 and the draw 15/8 – there are likely to be few takers of England's price. That is unless you subscribe to the view that England turned up at Seddon Park thinking everything would be easy against a New Zealand team shorn of their best players.

The tourists may have been confused for negativity when they were in fact over-confident. If so, they need all the arrogance they can get their hands on and they would be well served to remember that they have come back from losing the first Test of a series before, notably against Australia in the 2005 Ashes series.

For all the hopes of a swing bowlers' paradise, don't rule out Daniel Vettori causing England problems again. The spinner took ten wickets in the match when Sri Lanka were the visitors on this ground in 2006.
