West Ham were undone but the big story was Chelsea nearly losing to League Two Shrewsbury in what will probably go down as one of the more unbelievable fixtures in quite a while. Though the Blues emerged, ultimately, as the 2-1 winners, they had it all to do at one point and had to rely on Didier Drogba once again to help push them closer to victory. The Ivorian also scored against Manchester United last weekend.

Manchester City vs Newcastle is the opening contest of the day and you’ll find the Citizens trading at a very slim 2/7 price tag to get the victory here at home. Newcastle have come on a bit as of late and have been playing much better stuff - something Alan Pardew must certainly appreciate as he looked very likely to be facing the sack at one point this season.

The draw is trading at a 21/4 margin and that might entice some punters but you expect the vast bulk of the betting action will be heading towards the goalscorer or total points markets in this one as there is little value on the outright winner.

Newcastle are available at a full 10/1 margin right now and if they were to pull this off and knock City out of the competition, it would go down as a serious boost to their fortunes and likely give them some serious belief that they can make a genuine statement in the Premier League this year.

In regards to outright qualification here, City are a slim 1/7 listing while Newcastle can be backed at a 9/2 margin to progress by any means. Newcastle are a whopping 33/1 to win the match in extra time and a full 25/1 to win the fixture on penalties. City are a 10/1 shout to win it in extra time and if you’re going to be backing the draw that’s a great way to add some extra value to your ticket - particularly if you’re going to be favouring a lower-scoring affair for this match.
