Britain's Andy Murray started his Masters Cup Shanghai tournament on a positive note, taking his opening game against Andy Roddick in three sets. His next two round-robin matches will see him face off against Frenchman Gilles Simon and current World #2 Roger Federer who was undone by Simon in his opening match in a shock loss.

Murray's odds of qualifying have shortened considerably thanks to his first victory which was a bit of an odd match. Federer has it all to do if he is to progress to the next stage and must win his next two matches in convincing fashion. There is also a possibility that if Murray beats Simon by a convincing enough margin and Federer blows his next match against Roddick, that the much-vaunted Federer/Murray match could be something of a dead rubber.

Final Date Set

The final is set to take place on November 16 in Shanghai and will be shown live around the world and in the UK on Sky Sports. Popular UK bookmakers Totesport have placed Andy Murray as their favourite to win the Masters Cup outright, with current odds paying 15/8. Federer remains in with a definite shout, tied in 2nd with Djokovic at 11/4. Davydenko is a distant 8/1 with Andy Roddick looking like supremely good value at 33/1.
