That was the week that was
February 05, 2008 - Diana Volpers

In a week when glamour girl Jordan was revealed as a drunken 'bitch', Tiger Woods produced a stunning final round in Qatar, Manchester United produced a last ditch equaliser to dent Spurs hopes and England were beaten by a late Welsh charge at Twickenham, were we late to the party as we look at how our bets fared and what lies ahead this week in the world of betting
Football Betting: Premier League
Michael Dawson again helped Manchester United achieve a result against Tottenham. In the FA Cup last week he gave away a penalty and was sent off and in the Premier League he scored an injury time own goal to help United grab a point. Arsenal were able to go top after a convincing 3-1 win at Eastlands ended Manchester City's home record. Liverpool got back to winning ways with a 3-0 demolition of Sunderland while Chelsea lost pace at the top despite another Nicolas Anelka goal.
Rugby Betting: Welsh wonders
All seemed well for Brian Ashton's men after a dominant first-half display at Twickenham saw them lead 16-6 courtesy of Jonny Wilkinson's boot and a Toby Flood try. But 10 minutes of second half madness found Wales first back on level terms after a Lee Byrne try before Iain Balshaw had his clearance kick charged down for Mike Phillips to eventually go over in the corner to end Wales's poor run at Twickenham that had seen them without a win in 20 years in the Six Nations.
Golf Betting: Tiger leaves it late
Tiger Woods secured a one-shot victory in Qatar despite a poor third round that left him four shots off the pace going into the last round. A second seven-under 65, which included a monster eagle putt on the last, saw off the challenge of Ernie Els who had led for most of the final day but needing a birdie at the last found water off the tee to drop to third behind German sensation Martin Kaymer.
Our bets
The good: Richard Aikman again proved spot-on with his football predictions when he backed the free-scoring Emmanuel Adebayor as anytime goalscorer against Man City. The big forward duly obliged to give us a five-point profit. He also showed he knows a thing or two about the US version of football when he backed the New York Giants for victory against the undefeated New England patriots to give an eight-point profit as well as backing Eli Mnning for MVP - a seven-point gain. Ashley Wishaw also joined in as he correctly backed Italy against Irleand on the handicap to give a three-point return.
The bad: Asheley Wishaw fancied Scotland's chances against a tried and untested France side at Murrayfield but les Bleus never looked troubled as they raced to a 27-6 victory to leave us three points out of pocket.
The ugly: England were cruising against Wales and looking odds on to beat their 13-point handicap. However a second-half to forget saw Brian Ashton shaking his head in disbelief and us rueing a five-point loss.
The week ahead
Rugby: The Six Nations continues as Wales welcome Scotland to the Millennium stadium, Ireland travel to France and England go to Rome for their Sunday match-up against Italy
Football: Fabio Capello takes charge of his first game as England play a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday
Golf: Europe's top players leave the heat of Dubai to travel to the equally sweltering India for the inaugural Indian Masters
