This is not quite the lottery that many would imagine and fancied runners have dominated in the past decade. There are no prizes for selecting ante-post favourite Pedrillo, but the three year-old has so much going for him, not least the fact that he is trained by Sir Mark Prescott.

Sir Mark is the man the bookmakers fear when it comes to preparing a horse for a big race handicap such as this, having won the race three times in all, landing a gamble on each occasion. There has certainly be no shortage of support for Pedrillo, particularly since winning a Hamilton classified stakes to earn him the 5lb penalty needed to make his missing the cut for the race unlikely. There is no doubt that he is capable of more than what he has shown so far, and is probably up to winning in Listed class before long, which makes his handicap mark of 87 look extremely lenient. With a maximum field of 35 likely, luck in running will play a large part in the outcome, as will the draw (no winner from a single-figure draw since 1992), but Pedrillo has all the hallmarks of a horse laid out for the big race.
