2012 Betfair Chase Betting Preview Part 2

Silviniaco Conti won the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase and staked his claim on a repeat of last season when he conquered the Rising Star Novices and the Mildmay Novices. He scored in his first effort against open company and acquitted himself well with an impressive eleven length score over Wayward Prince. Midnight Chase, Time For Rupert and Planet of Sound were all well-beaten by the upstart fresh off the novice circuit. The bookmakers have him at a tasty 9/4 and it would be a major statement if he was able to defeat Long Run in his second effort against open company and his first Grade 1 race.

Weird Al lines up for this race and looks like he’s going to be competitive for the second or third spot despite it appearing a tough sale for win honors with most punters. He’s floating around 7/1 right now and will likely go off at a higher price on the day. He fell four out in last year’s Grand National and was pulled up in the Cheltenham gold Cup. He did finish third in this one last year after winning the Charlie Hall Chase against Time For Rupert in his previous run.
He’s a bet-at-your-own-risk type because he just seems a bit unlucky and sometimes struggles to finish a race.
The other entries here are Wayward Prince, who was a solid second to Silviniaco Conti in the Charlie Hall Chase. He’s not won since moving off the novices circuit but he may be able to offer up place claims at a decent price tag - particularly if you find anyone who will pay 3 places. If he improves off that last race, expect an interesting run in. He trades at 33/1.
Cannington Brook lines up for Colin Tizzard and he has won at Haydock before, scoring in an 8K Novice Chase last year by a massive 35 length margin. It was over 2m4f and heavy going so it’s not quite the same recipe as what he’ll get here.
He has also won a handicap chase over here back in December 2011 so he’s a horses for courses type. It would he his third score at Haydock in three efforts but his price is 25/1 for a reason.
