2012 Hennessy Gold Cup Chase Part 2

A really interesting variable in this one just might be Lion Na Bearnai last season’s Irish Grand National winner. He bested a field of 29 to romp home by a full four and a half lengths - his second victory on the bounce at that point.

While not exactly a proven contender at the highest level of chasing, he definitely looks like he could be able to put something solid together here and at least outrun the odds that he’s likely to get. He has a nice weighting for this one at 10-8 and could capitalize. 

The Package scored in his seasonal debut at Wincanton this year - a listed contest which carried a pretty solid purse. He outran his odds on the day, beating a field of twelve by nearly four lengths when sent off at a 5/1 price tag. He hasn’t really won in a while but may have turned a corner during the off-season and David Pipe has shown the ability to do very well with these types. 

Diamond Harry is expected to show up for this race and he has simply been pulled up in his last three races - it will be a near miracle if he can even finish the race. He’s been running at the highest level for quite some time but hasn’t won since capturing this race back in 2010. If he can roll back the years to when he was a promising seven year old chaser, he’ll be right in there. If he’s the Diamond Harry we saw in all the big races last year - he’s not even going to finish the race. 

Promising beginner Soll was unfortunately brought down at Cheltenham in the Amateur Riders Chase. He will be running at a short 9-13 for this one and, though he’s definitely a long shot to wind up actually getting the score, he may outrun odds that are expected to be quite generous. He’s strung together a steady series of wins since emerging off the point to point circuit and perhaps could have made a better breakthrough if he had been able to finish the race at Cheltenham last year. 

Verdict: There is still a long way to go before the race but we are leaning towards Lion Na Bearnai each way at 20/1 and The Package at 7/1.
