While it may not be the feature contest from Saturday’s impressive range of National Hunt action, it will definitely be one of the mostly-watched races as the seasonal debut of living legend Big Buck’s is usually something that dedicated jumps racing fans make an effort not to miss.

Undefeated since unseating his rider in 2008, Big Buck’s has been one of the best, if not the best, 3m+ hurdler of the modern era. It may not even so much be all the victories but the lengths of the victories that really tells the story.
Even his final race of 2011/12 saw him capture the Liverpool Hurdle by a nine length margin over a field of 8 that would have been a force to be reckoned with for anyone but the sensational son of Cadoudal.
The familiar tandem of Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls see Big Buck’s kick things off again this year at Newbury with an eye on sweeping the race for the fourth time of asking with Big Buck’s.
Doubtlessly, we will see a prohibitively short price of around 2/7 or 1/5 or something like that on Big Buck’s. It’s gotten to the point where the only way to actually make any decent money from his races is dropping a wager in-running if he makes any type of error during the race.
Expect him to deploy his usual tracking trip as he lays down a tricky gauntlet for the field of eight that have lined up to try to knock him off his stride early in the season. What a scalp it would be the defeat Big Buck’s this early in the season - there may actually be a little drama on the staying hurdler circuit for the first time since George W. Bush was still in office.
