Prospect Wells put in a very good shift against the talented Zarkandar in his seasonal debut at Wincanton, finishing second in a Grade 2 contest 1/4 of a length behind Zarkandar. He’s moved forward nicely since finishing fifth in the Supreme Novices’ last year. He was sent off at 14/1 on the day and looked good without ever having quite got there.

Smad Place has been out only once this year and it was a disappointing run as he finished 3rd despite being sent off at 10/11. Tidal Bay romped home that day and scored by a 4.5 length margin. Smad Place cantered home 25 lengths off the pace. He likely needed the prep race and he’s been able to flash some serious form at Ascot before - look for him to move forward after that one - just don’t expect the punters to get too carried away.
The one to watch might be Trustan Times - he has been very kind to his backers so far this season having conquered a pair of races this year and delivering at 10/1 on each effort. He’s beaten some big fields too - a group of 14 and one of 16.
The latest race, run on November 24, was a Grade 3 event and it really looks like this six year old might just be ready for this level as that was a tough handicap.
He might not look up to snuff from a ratings perspective but you can expect him to at least take a bit of money here from punters with Dougie Costello booked for the trip, as usual. What a coup this would be, but you do expect him to be wishing he was getting a few pounds on his competition.
Kayf Aramis also lines up for this one and he will be doing his best to become a factor here, but the fact remains that he’s not scored since running at York on the flat back in 2009. He was triumphant that year in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham but that was about the best he could do.
Having not found the winners’ circle in the better part of three years, you have to assume he’s running for a possible place finish, at best.
