One of the most widely-anticipated races, if not the biggest overall banker at this year’s Cheltenham Festival is undoubtedly going to be the Queen Mother Champion Chase with one of the current stars of steeplechasing - Sprinter Sacre. The talented and unbeatable brown gelding has put together a string of amazing performances over the last year or so when he emerged off the novice circuit at Kempton.
He has only been on course twice this year, once in the Tingle Creek Chase and the other time in the Victor Chandler Chase - both Grade 1 contests. He vanquished his foes by a combined 29 lengths on the day and looks set to kick on nicely again here with plenty of momentum making him nearly unbettable for Cheltenham.
As it currently stands, the punters have beaten Sprinter Sacre down to a slim 1/5 ante post price and you reckon that he’s going to go off even lower on the day - especially if he makes a really nice pre-race appearance.
This is made all the more impressive when you consider that he’s coming up against one of the stars of 2m chasing - Sizing Europe. The Champion Chase winner from 2011 was beaten a length and a bit last year by Finian’s Rainbow, but he’s been able to rattle off a sequence of five scores in a row with his seasonal debut coming this year at Gowran Park. The most impressive was at Clonmel, when he destroyed a field of five by a massive 20 lengths - but it was the Grade 1 score at Leopardstown in the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase which really sets him up for a run here.
It’s worth mentioning that Sizing is also co-entered in the RSA Chase - but his 5/1 price tells you that he’s much more likely to wind up here. While Sprinter Sacre seems to go from strength to strength, it’s this contender that really looms as the wild card .
