2012 York Ebor Runner Profiles Part 1

The 2012 York Ebor is set to run on Saturday and it's setting up to be another fantastic iteration of Europe's biggest handicap race. This one usually has a prohibitive make-or-break favourite but this time around we have several interesting single-digit contestants. The 1m6f race always separates the men from the boys and we've got a full selection of 20 very accomplished runners.

In this article, we'll be looking at the first ten candidates in the weights.

The top weight is Steps to Freefom who last scored in a handicap back in July at Dundalk. He's a hefty 22/1 and will need to step it up if he's going to get the job done. One notable reference on here was a third place finish to Fame And Glory at Navan when he was carrying the same weight. He's an interesting place wager but there are others here with more appeal.

Camborne enters after a pair of victories at Doncaster and Ascot, respectively and John Gosden has William Buick booked for the mount. Princess Haya's gelding carries an 8/1 price which places him firmly in the mix despite going in near the top of the weights. He's got a stroke against him from back in May when he finished a tame 6/16 in a 1m2f contest at York over similar footing. He looks to enjoy longer distances and may have just been placed in the wrong contest at the wrong distance. His OR has improved markedly between his last two races and he enters off a two-month freshening. He is a live mount and could very well be a factor.

Bob Le Beau hasn't scored in a few tries and will need to offer up some big improvement to even hit the board. He's 50/1 for a reason and is one of the longest shots out there.

Sense of Purpose hasn't had much luck in her past two races from this campaign but came within a half-length last time out when finishing fourth at Roscommon. She scored at Group 3 level last year at Leopardstown but that came against females. She enjoys the distance and could factor and she has even beaten 50/1 Bob Le Beau. At 25/1 she will be worth a look to some but there are others with more appeal.
