He is priced at a mere 3/1 in the ante post market and you do reckon that punters will be looking for longer prices and horses with higher quality chasing experience if they’re trying to beat out the talented Simonsig.

Arvika Ligeonniere is not only irritating to spell, it’s also a pretty talented eight-year-old from the Willy Mullins yard. Despite a falling effort last time out at Leopardstown, he’s had a quality season with a pair of Grade 1 scores in Ireland setting him up nicely for a kick at the Cheltenham can. He may just have gotten the back luck out of the way last time and there is every reason to think that he can at least be in the reckoning as they press towards the line here. Look for him around 10/1.
Captain Conan is a very plausible spoiler here and he’s another one boasting a competitive price of around 10/1. He’s taken all three races he’s attempted this year and his seasonal debut was run over 2m at Cheltenham so he has the credibility of a surface victory here. He boasts a pair of Grade 1 scores as well and, though he only took his last race by a neck, he really dug in and wore down the leaders. It wasn’t how you want a 1/2 favourite to win a race, but he did show that he can pull out all of the stops when he’s up against it.
Like many, he’s probably not as talented as Simonsig but he does have every ability to capitalize on a mistake made by the top choice.
Fago is the only other contender hovering around 10/1 and he’s got a credible second place in a Grade 1 chase at Auteil to his credit. He won his debut in England at Newbury, winning a 3k novice chase. He looked set to conquer a Grade 2 novice chase at Warwick a few weeks ago but fell two out when he had struck the front. He is very much an unknown quantity but was regularly winning good races in France and could be set to deliver here. I wouldn’t suggest taking him at 10/1 but looks a ripe bet at 16s.
Those looking for a longer odds selection should keep their eye on where Benefficient winds up going. He also boasts a co-entry for the Grade 2 Jewson - where he would be a much more likely contender. He is 33/1 here and just comes in fresh off a Grade 1 victory at Leopardstown. He is 20/1 for the Jewson but be sure to keep an eye on where he goes.
Prediction: Simonsig with Captain Conan putting in a best-of-the-rest performance.
