2013 Arlington Million Betting Preview Part 2
- By A.J. Ryder on August 14, 2013 16:16 GMTWith the race so wide open and, with Americans betting the vast majority of the pool, you can expect Grandeur to go off at a higher price on the board that day than he is currently available at right now. With a deep field and plenty of other accomplished selections in the mix here, you can assume that there will be significant variance between the European and American pools when it comes to Jeremy Noseda’s talented contender.

Veteran American turf specialist Little Mike won both the Breeders’ Cup Turf and the Arlington Million last year as he has ably filled the gap following Gio Ponti’s retirement. While his 2013 campaign has left a lot to be desired (two bad runs in Dubai and a forgettable loss at Monmouth Park), he does return to Arlington as the second choice in the European ante post markets and the likely favourite for American punters.
There is a lot to like about his frontrunning style and if some of the other frontrunners can’t break properly or just aren’t up to it, there is absolutely every chance that he’ll be able to sneak this one on the front end like he did last time.
Little Mike boasts a high cruising speed which is more important in American turf racing than it is on the grass across the pond. If he is able to slow down the second and third quarter miles to his liking then he will have enough in reserve to kick on nicely when challenged on the run-in.
Dale Romans trains the six-year-old bay gelding and he also has longshot Finnegan’s Wake in the line-up for this race as well, though they will run uncoupled.
Bookmakers have Little Mike floating at 6/1.
