Over the next few posts, we’ll be taking a look at the key races and trying to get a gauge on which way it’s all going to shape up.

The real narrative for the days action seems to be how the American contingent is going to do. One of the most notable things about all of the coverage during the build up to the  Dubai World Cup has been the fact that virtually all the pundits (especially the local ones) seem to be taking positions behind American runners. After a tepid showing from the American contingent last year in the World Cup, many are banking on this year being a different story.

The second race of the day is the first thoroughbred contest and we’ve got the Godolphin mile kicking things off in a big way. A full field of 16 sees one of the most open races of the day offer up a serious challenge to the handicapper. Much of the attention is going to be paid to the undefeated Soft Falling Rain and punters can expect her to take a considerable amount of money in this one.

The morning line price for Soft Falling Rain trades at 4/1 and he’s captured both of her efforts in Dubai in quite similar fashion and she really looks to be one of the standouts from Mike De Kock’s yard. Just a quick scan of his comment line reads “comfortably, easily, cruised in, in control, too good here and won going away.” It’s going to take a tremendous performance to dispose of this high-quality bay colt.

That doesn’t mean others aren’t going to be seeking out higher prices, especially with such a qualified Godolphin entry lining up in this one. Five year old gelding Moonwalk In Paris didn’t get things taken care of last time out but did win on a seasonal debut in the Firebreak Stakes when romping home by two lengths. He’s trading at 5/1 in this one and looks set to take the bulk of the money from those trying to beat Soft Falling Rain.
