Alpha, the Travers Stakes winner from 2012, gets a solid 15/1 price tag but he’s really gone off the boil in his last few with three significant defeats since his big moment at Saratoga. Much of the talent in his generation was either retired or pointed elsewhere for the Travers so it lacked the luster that past Travers winners have enjoyed.

One of the sharp selections appears to be Surfer, who is sitting at a 6/1 morning line price but doesn’t really boast the flashy recent results that some of the other ones in his price range have. However, he has been tipped as the main selection by local racing expert Pat Cummings. He had been campaigned at over a mile in his last two and gets a cut back in distance here. He conquered his first two efforts of this season - breaking his maiden at 1m then taking a 7f allowance race, the spacing between his races has been good and he is taking money for a reason.
The Dubai Gold Cup is the next race kicking off and there’s a lot to like about this one as well. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see a long odds selection in this one but it’s also going to be a race that maybe doesn’t take as much money because it’s a bit more of a low key affair without the out-and-out star power you’ll find in the other races.
Godolphin’s Cavalryman is priced out at 7/2 and looks like he’s a solid selection here as he boasts a genuine ability at the 2m distance. You can expect him to actually come out of the gate probably much closer to 2/1 as the bulk here are stepping up in trip.
