Star Empire looks to be the second choice here with a 6/1 shot and he’s proven near this distance with a score back in February at 1.75m. He couldn’t quite keep on when it really mattered last time out but you also reckon they didn’t want to push him 100% in that March 2nd race as their eye was likely fixed on a much bigger potential payday here.

The 12/1 price on Verema is interesting, especially because he ships in for this contest to kick off his campaign after a busy fall season at Longchamp. If he can genuinely get the distance (and his breeding suggests that he can) then this one will likely be ignored to the extent that you may be able to justify an each-way price if he gets to be around 16s or so. If he’s well-positioned on the run-in, look for him to make his presence known.
The 2013 UAE Derby looks to be one of the most wide-open races of the day as there is a couple contenders here who are very lightly-raced and will look to move forward in a very significant way. The American shippers make their presence felt in this one and Dice Flavor has already proven his ability over Tapeta by winning the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. The synthetic specialist gets Jose Valdivia Jr., his usual pilot, shipping over for this one and you can expect them to get it just right in this contest. They’re trading at 5/1 for the win and will go off at much longer odds in Europe, one suspects.
Secret Number showed up at Meydan as a maiden winner from Kempton and proceeded to conquer the Al Bastikya by a two length margin. Lightly-raced and blessed with piles of perceived upside, he’s a slim 3/1 morning line and will likely take the bulk of the money from UK-based punters.
He’s Had Enough is another California-based contender and he’s taking a bit of a tricky route to the Kentucky Derby after a recent string over mediocre results. He really turned heads last year losing by a slim neck in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. With preferred jock Mario Gutierrez (last year’s Kentucky Derby winning jockey) he’s going to be on the biggest stage ever. The 8/1 price is probably a bit too short considering his chances but he did break his maiden over a synthetic surface at Del Mar last year.
