2013 Hong Kong Vase Betting Tips
- By A.J. Ryder on December 4, 2013 00:15 GMTWith the Hong Kong International Weekend at Sha Tin nearly upon us, the excitement for this big meeting is absolutely palpable. There is a lot to like about each of the four feature contests, but the opportunity for The Fugue to continue her marauding ways across the globe is going to have plenty of punters in the UK and Europe wearing their hearts on their sleeve as this talented filly takes on an accomplished group of international competitors.

The Fugue was probably one of the most heavily-hyped horses at this year’s Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita who didn’t actually win. Many European books had her at extremely short odds - some as slim as 7/4 ante post to get the actual result against a tough field of runners in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Handling the full 1m4f didn’t seem like a really tough ask for her but it was the trip quality that ultimately did her in as Ryan Moore found himself hemmed in for the second year in a row and unable to really kick on when the race got down to its business end. She settled for a top 3 finish and will be taking her first shot at a race in Asia as she lines up in the Hong Kong Vase as the very prominent favourite against an international calibre group.
As it currently stands, punters will find The Fugue trading at a slim 7/4 for this one with most major bookmakers - and that’s about the highest price that you’ll find anywhere. She faces some extremely stiff competition from the likes of Galileo Rock, who has shipped over from the UK for this one. With a price of 6/1 ante post you can understand why the connections would choose to send him such a long way but the real one that you’ve got to keep your eye on is the 7/1 Red Cadeaux who is one of those horses who is nearly always in the mix and can beat anybody on their day with a bit of luck.
Red Cadeaux put in a game finish in the Melbourne Cup and nearly won the thing, so you can expect them to be confident about the horses ability to handle this race once again.
Dunaden is a 9/1 shot while Mount Athos, another Breeders’ Cup competitor looks like a very interesting opportunity at a 10/1 listing. Dandino is present for this one at 12/1 while Ebiyza is the highest ranked local in the race with a 14/1 rice tag. Other key contenders include Simenon at 25/1, Asuka Kurichan at 33/1 and Dominant reigns as a 50/1 shot.
