- By A.J. Ryder on May 30, 2013 15:53 GMTFollowing his sensational five length score in the 2000 Guineas, Dawn Approach is now headlining a very intriguing iteration of the Investec Derby and the bookmakers have him as low as 5/6 to capture the second classic of the year.

From a business standpoint, his incredible series of seven scores on the bounce makes him a hot breeding prospect no matter what the result of this contest is, but Guineas glory was a more important moral score for Godolphin.
Chiefly because it came at a particularly dark time when Sheikh Al Maktoum’s emerging trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni had been caught giving steroids to horses under his care. Al Zarooni was subsequently banned by the BHA for eight years.
Dawn Approach was unscathed by that scandal thanks to his presence in the Bolger yard and punters were rewarded on the day as the favourite came home easily at an 11/8 price tag. Layers on the exchange were in full retreat as Dawn Approach was immediately slammed in the ante post market to capture the Derby - a race he wasn’t favoured to win at the time.
The way he came on late in the race really showed you something about his ability to get the extra distance. By stalwart stallion New Approach out of a Phone Trick mare who had never broken her maiden, he has a slightly quirky pedigree that offers up an element of the unpredictable.
There looks to be every chance that he’ll be able to stay a full mile and a half over the Epsom surface, but the real ace up his sleeve looks to be the out-and-out winning mentality that the three-year-old colt has developed.
