2013 Investec Derby Betting Tips Part 3
- By A.J. Ryder on May 30, 2013 15:55 GMTAs it currently stands punters can get a 5/1 price on Battle of Marengo and that’s likely because he simply hasn’t been beaten by Dawn Approach yet. He boasts plenty of upside but also has a particular amount of downside because of being raced primarily in Ireland against very limited fields.
His most recent races have had fields of five and four, respectively.

Battle of Marengo will probably deliver more value on the day of the race as bookmakers will be adjusting prices based on relatively heavy volume coming in on the betting favourite. A price of 7/1 would not be completely out of the question if Dawn Approach gets bet down towards 3/5, which is looking more likely by the day.
There is also the presence of Ocovango, who is probably the most mysterious contender who has a genuine shot. Raced only three times, all at Saint Cloude in France, the son of German stallion Monsun is also undefeated. He took a Group 2 score there making his second start of the year and connections have pointed him at the Derby based off of that strong performance.
He shouldn’t struggle to get the extra two furlongs here but it will be interesting to see if he continues to deploy that frontrunning style he showed in that last encounter - breaking to the lead immediately and then making all throughout the entire contest. Though the margin was only half a length at the end of the race, he always looked like holding off the second place runner and showed that he still has a lot more to offer moving forward.
He can backed at a 15/2 price tag and looks like will probably hold at or around that price though you could see him taking a fair amount of cash if he is able to make a really good pre-race appearance.
