2013 Qipco Champions Day Betting Preview: Fillies & Mares’ Stakes PT 1
- By A.J. Ryder on October 17, 2013 20:09 GMTWhile there may only be nine entries in the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, the third contest of the day appears to be one of the hardest puzzles to decipher on the entire card. Many come into the race with a lot of mixed form and it’s going to be up to the punters who are willing to take risks here and potentially go against the top choices who really stand to benefit from the confusion.

Talent comes into the race as the slim betting favourite and Ralph Beckett has a lot going in his direction with this three-year-old daughter of New Approach. She certainly didn’t win her last race against Leading Light but the Oaks winner is due to get some respect with her new high mark of 114 off that race.
While she was sent off at 9/1 on that occasion it really showed that her Oaks win was no fluke - which was something called into question by her disappointing run in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh back in mid-July.
Punters have her bet down to 7/2 but taking on older didn’t suit her particularly well last time out and you have to wonder whether she deployed her best race of the season a bit too early.
One of the main challengers is expected to be The Lark, who is Group 1 placed and boasts a recent Group 2 score at Doncaster to her credit, Lady Bamford’s runner was able to take on older fillies and mares that day and emerge with a creditable victory.
Her ability to quicken at the right moments really show class beyond her three years and you have to wonder whether Michael Bell and Jamie Spencer have got this filly correct at just the right time.
