2013 St Leger Betting Preview and Tips Part 2
- By A.J. Ryder on August 28, 2013 21:09 GMTExpect him to do a bit better going three off the freshening and looking to build on his last effort - the Group 2 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood. He finished a close second by a head to Cap O’Rushes and he was sent off as the betting favourite on the day.
He is one of only three horses who was a beaten favourite last time out and you have to respect that he is getting such prominent play in the ante post market despite the single solitary win to his credit.
Out of a German sire that not many punters are particularly familiar with, it’s going to be interesting to see how they react but you do know that John Gosden will have him in cracking form and the addition of William Buick up top is never a bad thing for these Juddmonte entries.
Galileo Rock is also winless since his maiden score at Leopardstown last year but he is able to boast two Group 1 placings, which he achieved in the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby. He was sent off at lengthy prices both times but has always outrun his odds. While he has been able to tangle with some quality company in each of those races you do get the feeling from the form lines that he may not be able to handle the additional two panels that he will be saddled with for his St Leger entry.
He has remained one-paced during the crucial moments of both of those contests - looking like a sharp bet for the placings but never really threatening the winner even though he only lost by less than two lengths both times out.
Aidan O’Brien saddles Leading Light, who makes up the third contender vying for the betting favourite’s position. He has taken four races on the bounce and is undegeated so far this year and has a pair of Group 3 victories to his credit. He appears to be forming a quality partnership with Joseph O’Brien and the three-year-old son of Montjeu looks to be moving along nicely.
