The first race of the day is the Sky Bet Stakes, which is a tricky Class 2 Handicap set to run over a 1m4f distance. There are some very established contenders set to run in this one and the race is quite formful actually, even when you get towards the top end of the handicap.
Godolphin have a very sneaky entry in here at the bottom of the weights with three-year-old Winterlude looking a sharp selection coming out of Charlie Appleby’s yard. Regally bred, this young contender has taken two victories in both of his efforts this year with one score on the turf and the other on the all weather. He is by Street Cry and is out of a Sadler’s Wells mare.
With De Sousa booked for the trip he has plenty of credibility though he will have to step it up in a big way after capturing the solitary handicap effort at Doncaster (where he beat more than a couple that will be running in this race as well).
The top weight is Gospel Choir, a Galileo out of a Pivotal mare, who is making his first start since last September. He’s been contesting some big handicaps over the past while but is still lightly-raced for a four-year-old with only five efforts under his belt so far.
