The race sold out nearly instantly following the dramatic victory in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore. There was so much to savour about the manner of California Chrome’s victory there and the expertise to which Victor Espinoza was able to guide him home.

Pushing forward in the Belmont is a very important happening and a lot of people seem to think that connections will adopt a separate set of tactics for this race - the wily 77-year-old trainer Art Sherman surely has a few tricks up his sleeve for big occasions like this and you can expect them to kick on and produce something really memorable on the day.

The bookmakers are convinced that California Chrome remains a genuinely good chance for this race and the price that many European books are currently offering will be much much higher than what you will actually see on the day at Belmont Park in the pari-mutuel pools. Danza had been one of the feared contenders to be challenging California Chrome once again - the upstart colt was a third place finisher in the Kentucky Derby and a shock winner of the Arkansas Derby a month prior. He was withdrawn from the race, however, after he put together a workout that saw trainer Todd Pletcher instantly get hesitant about his chances of running. Since he was not 100%, his connections decided to scratch based on Pletcher’s advice.
