This made Preakness runner-up Ride On Curlin the de facto second choice here but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to replicate that late charge he demonstrated on the stretch run at Pimlico. He is a 5.50 shot right now and looks like an interesting outside option for some people but many are convinced that he left his Belmont race in Baltimore.

Commanding Curve was the second place finisher in the Kentucky Derby and he either made or broke a tremendous amount of tickets to finish second and still deliver a tote-board exploding price of about $172 for the exacta when combined with the favourite. Punters could have keyed up 5/2 California Chrome and still made out like a bandit - even if they wheeled him top and bottom. 

He has had plenty of rest between now and the Derby but you get the feeling that an out-and-out closer like him will have little chance on the deep, tiring stretch at Belmont unless they really burn themselves out too early - which they are unlikely to do now at this point. 

Tonalist looks to be the horse that many are genuinely afraid of and that’s likely because he’s a bit of an unknown quantity. Christophe Clemente has done some nice work with this colt but it’s going to be interesting to see whether he can genuinely match a horse of California Chrome’s quality. Punters have both him and Commanding Curve backed into 6.0. 

Wicked Strong appears to be an interesting option for many as well but there is an element of fans who believe that he was more or less exposed in the Kentucky Derby and flattered to deceive to get the spot that he did. Watch for him to try to come late again, but likely to no avail. He is priced at 7.0 and will likely take some money on the day. 

Samraat is a great horse but is unlikely to relish the 1.5m distance on offer here and he is a 17.0 chance while Commission is trading at a 26.0 price tag. Social Inclusion is 34.0 now that Intense Holiday has dropped out due to an injury. Kid Cruz is the longest shot on the board at 34.0.
