The honours at the end of last season really seemed to go towards Dynaste and Silviniaco Conti as each of them notched a victory at festival time - winning at Cheltenham and Aintree, respectively. One has to wonder what might have been had Cue Card been fit enough for both of those races as he had gotten the better of them in previous efforts and wouldn’t have been out of nick going over either surface on the day.
Dynaste had it all to do in the Ryanair Chase last year but really gutted things out when he needed to after deploying a tracking trip and moving a move at the right time to power home by a two and a quarter length margin ahead of a tough group of challengers that included Hidden Cyclone, Boston Bob, Al Ferof and Hunt Ball.
He was deployed much closer to the pace in his next race at Aintree, only to lose out to Silviniaco Conti so you have to wonder how they will actually contest the race. Tom Scudamore is booked, however, and this should be a big one for him with books agreeing that he is a general 4/1 favourite.
It’s interesting to note that not a single bookmaker rates Dynaste ahead of Cue Card despite their prices being so close.
Silviniaco Conti is trading at anywhere from 4/1 to 5/1 for his effort in the 2014 Betfair Chase and he had a solid year all things considered after having taken the King George VI over Cue Card at Christmas and then capturing the Betfred Bowl Chase at Aintree. His fourth place finish in the Cheltenham Gold Cup will have been a disappointment but it still paid out a solid amount of prize money.
