2014 Investec Derby Betting Preview Pt 1
- By A.J. Ryder on May 13, 2014 02:53 GMTAidan O’Brien comes into the next English Classic absolutely loaded with four contenders - one of which is the prohibitive even money favourite. There is a lot to like about how the race is shaping up and virtually everyone’s eyes have been firmly fixed on the conditions underfoot. Expect a few interesting swings in the wagering as well - particularly when we actually get closer to the race itself.

The prices on Australia are a bit all over the map at this point but Ladbrokes have him priced the absolute shortest - being the first book to take him into evens. The best price you’ll find out there right now is 11/8 with Skybet and the third place finisher in the 2000 Guineas is expected to perform to task.
It’s also interesting that he’s got Ryan Moore booked for the trip - easily one of the best jockeys anywhere on the planet - he is in a particularly rich vein of form right now and has unleashed some excellent rides as of late.
It was pretty clear that you can’t really hold Australia’s third place in the Guineas against him as he is definitely bred for this distance and should be able to really unleash his prime power in the extra panels that he will have to work with here.
The second best contender seems to be True Story - who has only really emerged recently as a genuine stand-out for this race and has actually only ever been on-course three times in his career. He opened his account for the season about a month ago when he conquered a listed event at Newmarket by a hefty seven length margin.
This would be a major accomplishment for Godolphin and certainly a feather in their cap. His breeding is particularly interesting - by German sire Manduro out of a Darshaan mare. Expect Saeed bin Suroor to perhaps use some different tactics with him here.
