The odds then take a bit of a jump as we mix into the large amount of contenders who are all trading in the 10/1-20/1 range. There are nearly a dozen contenders on the ante post market currently who remain difficult to nail down, price-wise. The likes of Kingston Hill are in at 12/1, Western Hymn can be had as low as 10/1 while Fascinating Rock looks to be a really interesting contender here with a firm price of around 14/1 with most books.
Geoffrey Chaucer is another really interesting contender that is worth a bigger look. He came out of a pretty messy race at Leopardstown last week finishing third to Fascinating Rock and many expect him to really put something together here. He has emerged as a bit of a wiseguy selection and his Group 2 win from last year makes him a really interesting contender in this position.
Toast Of New York is another interesting outsider and he was qualified for the 2014 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs but connections thought he would do better on the grass at Newmarket and will instead make a move towards this race. Bookmakers seem in relative agreement about his talent but you’ll find an across the board price of about 25/1 with most bookmakers right now. He is one of the most uniformly-priced horses in this tricky ante post market.
Other long shots include Berkshire, Kingfisher and Arod who can be backed anywhere from 25s all the way up to 50s.
While there are many who believe that last year’s Derby was not really one for the ages, there is definitely the possibility that we might be able to see something genuinely special here in 2014 as Australia heads towards a coronation at Newmarket.
