After the Florida and Louisiana Derbies last weekend its going to be especially interesting to see if we have some new contenders starting to emerge or some of the more well-fancied selections further shortening their prices.
As it currently stands, the likes of Bayern, California Chrome and Samraat stand to be the biggest winners of the entire weekend as this trio of three-year-old thoroughbreds look to further ensconce their credentials as the top Kentucky Derby contenders of 2014.
It has been a particularly interesting passage to America’s biggest race this year with a number of the top early contenders all finding themselves on the sidelines as things start to get really interesting. Shared Belief, Honor Code and Top Billing have all seen themselves fall by the wayside as injuries start to catch up with them at a crucial point on the Derby trail.
Right now, the outright favourite for the contest appears to be Constitution who is the only Kentucky Derby contender currently trading at a single digit price. He hovers around 8/1 at the moment but was paying 5/1 on the day he actually won the Florida Derby. It’s worth asking yourself what type of Florida Derby winner this horse is - an Orb type or a Dialed In type.
