2014 Kentucky Derby Preview Pt 2

There is a significant difference.

California Chrome is already in the Kentucky Derby thanks to his impressive victory in the San Felipe a few months ago. Rapidly ensconcing himself as the main choice for a number of future wagers and ante post selections, the focus race for him is the Derby not the Santa Anita Derby. Expect instructions for the jockey to be not to push him particularly hard as they don’t want to leave his Kentucky race on the track in Arcadia, California.

Bookmakers have him priced around 10/1 right now and he is slightly shorter in the Kentucky Derby future wager final book. He shares a price with another contender who only emerged last weekend - the widely-vaunted Toast of New York who romped home in the UAE Derby after winning a very minimal race at Wolverhampton prior to that and earning a mere $6400 for his efforts.

Now he’s priced around 11.0 with most bookmakers and saw his odds drop from 100/1 to 7/1 with some of them prior to that big victory at Meydan.

The other ones to watch appear to be Tapiture, who is available at 16/1 in Europe, as well as Candy Boy who could emerge as a stand-out selection if he wins the Santa Anita Derby - which many expect him to do. Punters will find him trading at 16/1 as well, right alongside the likes of Social Inclusion.

Expect both Bayern and Hoppertunity to have significant chances of being the big story coming out of the weekend - particularly if California Chrome doesn’t actually win the Santa Anita Derby. Anybody looking for the potential of a significant market mover may do well to take a look at Uncle Sigh, who is priced at 50/1 right now and would likely shorten to at least 16/1 if he was to actually win the Wood Memorial over long-time rival Samraat.
