We already know that Faugheen can handle Cheltenham, having captured the Neptune Novices Hurdle last year by a four and a half length margin over Ballyalton. He was sent off at a 6/4 price on the day which seems like a pile of value if you look at his last couple of attempts.

Faugheen’s chief rival is the in-form Nigel Twiston-Davies runner The New One, who has strung together a very impressive list of runs so far this season. He’s been out four times and hasn’t lost a single one. This also comes on the back of a money-spinning victory in the Aintree Hurdle at last year’s Grand National meeting when he bested Rock On Ruby.

You’ll find The New One priced at a general 3/1 with most major bookmakers right now and looking like he’s going to give Faugheen a real run for his money. With a good clean trip and his usual stalking style, we can expect a fascinating finish. However, he has tendency to jump right handed at times and when you’re up against a talented runner like Faugheen, you cannot make mistakes like that. There is literally no margin for error here.

Jezki is also in the mix here and he’s done well for himself over the past while but hasn’t been winning races like he used to as of yet this season. He won his seasonal debut but has only been able to hit the board since then. He’s trading anywhere from 9/2 to 5/1 and looks like he may be an interesting forecast wager but certainly is not attracting the win-volume that you would expect for a third favourite in a big race like this.

The presence of Hurricane Fly is also a must-mention as the venerable hurdling hero will be back for another kick at the can here. The living legend would make such an incredible statement if he was able to get the better of the young gun Faugheen. Miracles can happen at Cheltenham - and his price as low as 7/1 shows that there are plenty who still believe the old boy has it in him.
