Since this is the very last time that we will see living legend Tony McCoy contest this gruelling 4m4f race, the punters have come out in full force in the ante post market to ensure that he will be going off at a very short price. Right now, you’ll find him best price 8/1 for National glory and his campaign this year (if that’s what you want to call it) does give him a great opportunity as you can’t really come into the race more fresh than he is.
Unraced since winning at Carlisle in a Class 2 back in early November, he won by a solid eight lengths over the likes of Vintage Star when sent off at a 2/1 price tag in a slim field of five contenders. He drew clear on the run-in and looked really good when he hit the line.
He has a win at Aintree but certainly not on the National course and punters will have to be concerned about his overall level of sharpness as he simply hasn’t been on the racetrack in nearly five months.
The likes of Balthazar King and Rocky Creek really look to be the main dangers and Balthazar King is an established prospect for the Grand National that always gives punters a decent run for their money. He was only beaten by a mere five lengths last time in the National and managed to pull past a few over the final couple of fences but was unable to challenge Pineau De Re - who stormed home emphatically to score at a big price.
