There is a lot to like about the way that things are shaping up this year in the National Hunt and you can bank on some contenders being able to make big statements in these opening few contests.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup could be a fascinating race and the betting markets seem to indicate that plenty of value is out there with the early closers showing 52 different contenders entered in the race. This means that the betting favourite for the contest can be backed as high as 9/1 so this could be a really exciting handicap once things actually get figured out and we have the final line-up.
The race is always a real test of the 2m4f division and you can see a few who have already had seasonal debuts getting the bulk of the early money here.
The betting favourite, at the moment anyway, appears to be Kings Palace who is trading as low as a 7/1 margin for Paddy Power Gold Cup glory. David Pipe’s seven-year-old trainee put together an exciting body of work last year only be to be undone at Cheltenham by Don Poli when he could only muster up a tame sixth place finish in the RSA Chase.
He tends to make all so expect him to go to the lead early on here with plenty of talented contenders expected to line up against him, he might do well to make this race his own and kick on once again from the get-go.
Chief among his competition here is Boondooma who lines up for Dr Richard Newland and enters fresh off a Class 2 handicap victory at Cheltenham with Will Kennedy in the irons. He looked very game in that victory as he opened his account for the season and it’s worth noting that he had been off since around Christmas time of 2014 when he scored in a Class 2 novice chase at Haydock Park.
