2015 Travers Stakes Betting Preview PT 2
- By A.J. Ryder on August 23, 2015 21:12 GMTThe European bookmakers have gone live with the latest prices on American Pharoah and he is trading right now at a 1/5 margin. Punters will probably be avoiding him in anything but the big multi-race parlays but the fact remains that it will likely make a lot more sense to wager on the American tote than to actually lock in a 1/5 price tag because it represents no value against a field that will probably be a lot smaller than you think but still contains some genuinely excellent contenders.

Chief amongst the spoilers is Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champ Texas Red who made a big splash last year winning the big contest at Santa Anita before picking up an injury that ruled him out of the Triple Crown season. He made a winning return to the races and will be looking good as he moves forward with many expecting him to be the significant second favourite here once the betting pools actually open up 40 minutes before the race at Saratoga.
Punters will find Texas Red available at a very interesting 7/1 listing right now with most major bookmakers who have already floated their betting line. In what looks like it could be a deep market but a relatively short field actually lining up physically in the gate. Pay particular attention to the movement that happens during the build-up to the race after his next timed workout.
Just behind him is the horse that American Pharoah had to put away at the far turn in the Belmont Stakes as Frosted returns here after a good rejuvenating spell on the sidelines following a tough Triple Crown chase for the Kiaran McLaughlin trainee. The fact remains that this is an extremely talented horse with plenty of interesting potential as he moves forward and develops later on in his three-year-old season and matures more physically.
Right now he could be a good shout at an 8/1 price tag with some books actually only indexing him alongside Texas Red at a 7/1 listing. Frosted is very likely to be at least a part of the mix but the simple fact remains that American Pharoah has shown that he can get the better of him and the only edge he might have on the Triple Crown champion is the fact that he is likely a fresher horse coming into this big contest at Saratoga.
