2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Preview PT 1
- By A.J. Ryder on January 5, 2016 18:24 GMTThe ante post markets for the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup are now in full swing after the King George VI Chase and the new year itself. The markets are starting to move around pretty significantly in the build-up to the race itself and the punters are starting to take a serious look at the ante post markets in anticipation of the big showpiece in the Cotswalds in March.
Don Cossack had been one of the key selections and loomed large over the favourites position in the ante post markets for quite some time. You can expect him to continue to pick up some steam potentially but his falling effort in the King George (at a crucial moment in the race, no less) has seen him drop into second place in the ante post market behind the respected Djakadam.
Prior to the King George, Don Cossack had been on an impressive run of form wth just a single loss in nine races and that loss was a third place finish in the Ryanair last year at Cheltenham. He had been sent off as the betting favourite nearly every time and strung together a steady collection of good quality performances.
You’ll find Don Cossack now trading at a margin of about 5/1.
Another big entry for Willy Mullins (who seems to have nine or ten big fancies for the Gold Cup) is the current betting choice Djakadam. He comes into the race fresh off a score in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown which is a Grade 1 affair. He was able to get the better of six other contenders in this one and triumph by a twelve length margin over Valseur Lido at a price of around 7/4 with the majority of major bookmakers.
