2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Preview PT 2
- By A.J. Ryder on January 5, 2016 18:25 GMTPrior to that he had actually been beaten by Don Cossack in the Punchestown Gold Cup last year. Before that he had finished a very close second to Coneygree in the Cheltenham Gold Cup itself and nearly delivered at a 10/1 price tag. That’s the basis for the gamble that is currently unfolding and has driven his price down towards a margin of about 7/2 with some books going 4/1 right now.
He will certainly take a large amount of support from the Irish punters (as will most of the big contenders here with relatively short prices) so you have to assume that if you’re going to back Djakadam now then you best get your money down and hope he stays healthy in the interim.
Don Poli had been a significant fancy for quite some time and appears to be picking up some steam now that it is confirmed that he will be heading towards Cheltenham for the Gold Cup this year. He comes into the race fresh off a solid score in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown where he was able to get the better of First Lieutenant by a mere half length margin over going such a long distance.
He is trading at a 6/1 margin right now and is virtually neck and neck in terms of price with stablemate Don Poli. You will see a few books going 5/1 on him right now and that price could drop if he builds up steam en route to the Gold Cup.
Cue Card made all the headlines by scoring in the King George as the third favourite in a very exciting renewal of the contest. He is priced alongside all the other main contenders in the 6/1 corridor with a few books going into a 5/1 price tag at the time of this writing. Should Cue Card be able to pull this off then you can expect plenty of excitement heading into next season and the rest of the festival dates.
Look out for the likes of Vautour to potentially make an impact as well and you’ll find him priced anywhere from a 6/1 margin all the way up to a 10/1 price tag right now. The odds then take a big jump to Road To Riches and More Of That who are both trading anywhere from a 12/1 margin to a 20/1 margin.
