As it currently stands, the bookmakers are giving their edge to Shared Belief, who is now trading at a 3/1 margin after being clipped from 10/1 after conquering the Pacific Classic. Punters will have to respect that price but it doesn’t really make for an outstanding wager when you consider the fact that he will probably be around 2/1 or 3/1 on Classic Day anyway.
Shared Belief is set to return in the Awesome Again Stakes on Santa Anita’s opening weekend for their September meet that concludes with the Breeders’ Cup. He will be facing much of the same field and will go off at a very short price.
California Chrome is currently trading at a 4/1 margin that he has been listed at for quite some time as the bookmakers installed him as the outright choice building up to the big race. Should California Chrome lose the Pennsylvania Derby, you would have to assume that the fans will shift off of him for the Classic and that may be to their detriment as he has won some big races over that Santa Anita surface - which has just been refitted with new dirt.
The other major contenders here include the likes of Palace Malice, who was defeated by the very speedy Moreno in the Whitney Handicap earlier this year at Saratoga Springs. Palace Malice hasn’t really ever performed that well at Santa Anita but remains in the mix as the third betting choice at 6/1.
